News Now: Braves are set to sign…

The Braves may select some of these prospects in the 2024 MLB Draft.

The 2024 MLB Draft is quickly approaching, and the Braves will have plenty of intriguing first-round choices at their disposal.

It’s critical to focus on the future even though the Braves are now playing the Dodgers in a difficult series on their west coast tour. In this instance, the 2024 MLB Draft is not only only a few months away but also has the potential to significantly impact the Braves’ franchise for years to come.
The 2024 MLB Draft will feature players from both the collegiate and high school categories and will take place on July 14–16, 2024, during the All-Star Break. Although the exact schedule is still pending, we can fairly confidently predict that the first two rounds will take place on the first day, followed by rounds three through ten on the second day, and the final ten rounds on the third.

Though we can only speculate, we do not know who the Braves will select.
Prospects for the Braves in the 2024 MLB Draft
Since it would be foolish to predict later round picks at this early stage, the focus will be on the first round selections. Thanks to their 2023 record and assistance from the Padres and Yankees, whose picks were pushed back ten spots because they surpassed the luxury tax threshold by more than $40 million last year, the Braves choose 24th overall in the first round this year. With a $7,765,000 draft bonus, the Braves have the sixth-lowest pool in all of baseball. As a point of perspective, the Guardians have the first overall pick in this year’s draft and a $18,334,000 draft bonus pool in 2024.

One can make some educated guesses about who the Braves would consider in the first round this year based on their draft position and past performance. Although it can be difficult to accurately rank draft prospects because they are subject to change leading up to the draft, there is enough agreement among national media over the players that may be selected in the first round to make a guess as to who Atlanta might select at number 24 overall.

Kellon Lindsey Class of 2024 - Player Profile | Perfect Game USA

Kellon Lindsey, SS
It’s obviously ridiculous to consider that the Braves don’t have a long-term player at shortstop, the only position on the field without one. Orlando Arcia has performed well enough to maybe earn an extension, but the Braves could choose Florida high school shortstop Kellon Lindsey to spread their risk a little. Lindsey fits the bill for the Braves’ preference for multi-sport players, and he can really light up the bases. Although Lindsey’s lack of power projection hurts a little, the Braves have plenty of power hitters, and Lindsey has made enough progress this spring to be a valuable long-term project.

RHP Brody Brecht

2024 MLB Draft Deep Dive: Brody Brecht, RHP, Iowa. - Edge of Philly Sports Network
Brecht of Iowa should not be available when the Braves select this year, based only on his material. College arms with a wipeout slider and a 100-yard thrower like Brecht typically get selected in the top 10. The problem is that Brecht has extremely harsh command, though many believe that since he isn’t playing football anymore and is only concentrating on pitching, it will get better. The good thing about the Braves is that they have enough other pitching prospects to handle having a flame-throwing reliever out of the deal, even if Brecht ends up in the bullpen. The Braves love pitchers with power stuff.

Johnson, Carter, SS

2024 Draft: Carter Johnson, SS
Returning to the shortstop class, Carter Johnson, an Alabama prep shortstop, is an additional option, though many evaluators believe he will eventually need to play second or third base. He already has a hit tool that is above average, and when he fills out his frame, he should be able to produce more power. While Johnson isn’t flawless, his overall game is really good, and he would be a great addition to the Braves farm system as someone who doesn’t need to get big league ready too soon. The Braves REALLY need more depth in their position player prospects.

Dakota Jordan, OF Braxton Davidson in 2014 was the last outfielder selected by Atlanta in the first round, and things didn’t go too smoothly. Dakota Johnson of Mississippi State, though, might have the tools to persuade the Braves to give it another go. He used to play football, which attests to his athleticism. He possesses incredible raw power, plus quickness, and bat speed. Given his swing and miss, his hit tool is a little speculative, but he does draw walks, and college hitters with this kind of upside aren’t often this cheap. Johnson should at least be given a thorough examination by the Braves if he is available.

Carson Benge, OF/RHP

2024 Draft: Carson Benge, OF/RHP

Two-way players are all the rage these days and Atlanta does like guys that do it all which bodes well for Oklahoma State’s Carson Benge. It is most likely that Benge will be an outfielder as a pro as he has the arm and range to play all three outfield positions. He also has a very quick left-handed stroke and has a knack for putting the barrel on the ball while possessing a good knowledge of the strike zone. It also doesn’t hurt that he can throw a fastball in the mid-90’s and has three decent secondary pitches on the mound. Benge only has a fringe chance of even making it to the Braves, but should be in the running if he is indeed sitting there.
