Braves pay Angels to get RHP Jimmy Herget.
Atlanta Jimmy Herget is a right-handed reliever that the Braves acquired from the Angels in exchange for cash.
Herget pitched at Triple-A Salt Lake this season until the Angels designated him for assignment. The 30-year-old pitcher was sent to Gwinnett, the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, following the completion of the deal on Thursday.
Herget’s greatest season with the Angels came in 2022, when he made 49 appearances over 69 innings with a 2.48 ERA and nine saves. He played in 29 games last season, going 2-4 with a 4.66 ERA.
He hasn’t pitched in the majors this season. He was 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA in 10 appearances for Salt Lake.
The trade is essentially a depth move by the Braves, giving them an additional reliever at Triple-A with big league experience. Herget, who was added to the 40-man roster, also has pitched for Cincinnati and Texas.
Braves place reliever Pierce Johnson (elbow) on 15-day IL.
With irritation in his elbow, Atlanta Braves reliever Pierce Johnson was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. Meanwhile, right-hander Jackson Stephens was selected from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Johnson’s transfer to IL took effect on Wednesday. Left-hander Angel Perdomo (elbow) was placed on the 60-day IL in order to make room for Stephens on the 40-man roster.
This season, Johnson, 32, has made 13 bullpen appearances and is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He is 14-16 with a 3.98 ERA, 14 saves in 220 appearances (two starts) across seven seasons with five different organizations.
Stephens, 29, had five appearances with Gwinnett and was 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA. In 80 games (five starts) across four seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and Braves, he is 7-7 with a 4.19 ERA.
The Braves added depth to their bullpen that they can stash in the minors.

Anthopoulos is making a deal with a front office he is very familiar with, as the Angels’ GM used to work for Anthopoulos. Herget is a veteran who has had some brief success in the majors, but has not been as good recently. He posted a really good season in 2022 and had a solid season in 2021 as well, before falling off in 2023. At his best he puts up a mediocre strikeout rate while keeping walks and home runs to a minimum, using his breaking balls (slider and curveball) to good effect. His fastballs (sinker and four-seamer) are quite hittable, but he throws his breaking balls the majority of the time. He’s nice veteran depth to stash at AAA without costing any meaningful assets.
