The small deal returns a Phillies sixth-round draft pick to the club.
The Philadelphia Phillies made a modest transaction during Tuesday night’s 10-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. According to Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies have acquired Tyler Gilbert from the Cincinnati Reds for cash considerations.

In 2015, the Phillies selected Gilbert, a left-handed pitcher, in the sixth round of the draft. The 30-year-old played five years in Philadelphia’s minor league system before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 for outfielder Kyle Garlick (subscription required).

Gilbert finally made his way to the Arizona Diamondbacks via the Rule 5 Draft. He made his major league debut in 2021, pitching a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres. He finished the season with a 3.15 ERA in 40 innings over nine games (six starts). He battled to a 5.23 ERA in 51 2/3 innings over the last two seasons, spending the majority of his time with the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate.
He signed with the Reds as a free agent this offseason, but he had a 13.11 ERA in 11 2/3 innings with the Triple-A Louisville Bats.

Gilbert, a 24-year-old minor leaguer for Philadelphia, advanced to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2018. He had a 3.63 ERA in 34 2/3 innings as a reliever, with 28 strikeouts and three saves in 25 games. In 2019, he participated in 36 games with the IronPigs, finishing with a 2.83 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings.

Gilbert will report to Triple-A, adding to the Phillies’ pitching depth. He will suit up for the IronPigs for the first time since the 2019 season. The Phillies will see what he has left in the tank and whether he can regain his 2021 form.

This offseason, Spencer Turnbull’s depth signing proved successful for the Phillies front management. Turnbull, who has a no-hitter on his resume, arrived with injury and underperformance baggage, so the Phillies will try to uncover something in their newest acquisition from the Reds.
